The Ice Factory Renovation - Brickwork Contractor
We’re delighted to share that the renovation of 27 Eccleston Place - the iconic Ice Factory in London, has received a prestigious BDA Brick Award for Refurbishment 2024. Recognising the project’s excellence in design, materials and execution. Langdale Associates had the privilege of serving as the Brickwork Contractor for this significant transformation, working alongside architect Buckley Gray Yeoman and Collins Construction to bring the magnificent building to life.

A Landmark Restored

Originally constructed in 1830 as Shingleton’s ice factory, 27 Eccleston Place has undergone various transformations over nearly two centuries, serving as a coachworks, power station and garage. Today, this historic site has been reimagined as a dynamic 2,687m² space, accommodating modern workspaces, retail and two new restaurants across five floors, all whilst preserving its industrial character.

The architectural approach preserved the building’s historical fabric while introducing a two-storey extension with a distinct saw-tooth roofline. This feature, with ribbon lights maximising natural light, recalls the industrial roots of the site. Respecting the Conservation Area setting, the project prioritised retaining the original brickwork while blending old and new in a seamless yet respectful way.

A Custom Brick Solution

Brick Restoration by Langdale Associates
The Eccleston Blend is a bespoke mix of six distinct brick types, which was developed by architect Buckley Gray Yeoman in collaboration with Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC.

Steel Grey
Coarse Textured Renovation Blend
Light Victorian Red Lightly Renovated
Multi Brindle
Weathered Grey
Type 9 Base Stock

We implemented this unique blend according to the architect’s specifications. Our work involved achieving the project’s goals of creating a cohesive extension that subtly contrasts with the original structure, preserving the building’s character within the Belgravia Conservation Area. By carefully applying a stretcher bond pattern, we delivered a clean, modern finish that aligns with the architectural diversity of the surrounding area while respecting the historic fabric of the original building.

Recognising the Team Behind the Project

This Brick Award for Refurbishment 2024 highlights the combined efforts of everyone involved, including architect Buckley Gray Yeoman, Michelmersh Brick Holdings PLC and main contractor Collins Construction. We’re proud to have played our part in this renovation, demonstrating Langdale Associates’ commitment to quality in brickwork.

We look forward to future projects that value both heritage and thoughtful design.
